The Racers (1-0) opened their 93rd season of college basketball by putting together two solid halves in holding the Raiders (1-1) to 38 percent from the field and 17 percent from the 3-point line. Ja Morant and Tevin Brown powered the MSU attack with 27 and 17 points respectively, while newcomer Darnell Cowart came off the bench to add 11 points. Morant added 11 assists for a double-double and he also grabbed five rebounds. He had six double-doubles and one triple-double a year ago in his freshman season. Leading 35-29 at the half, Brown scored the first eight points of the second half as Morant assisted on a pair of 3-pointers and one shot in the paint for a MSU 43-34 lead at 18:32. The closest the Raiders could get was four points with 13:35 remaining, but the Racers answered with a 9-1 run which included a pair of Cowart post-up buckets and a 3-pointer from Mike Davis for a 54-42 advantage with 11:14 left. Morant and Brown each hit threes to push the Racers to their largest lead of the night with 2:22 left at 73-54. The Racers hit 54 percent from the field (27-of-50) in total and were 10-of-22 from the 3-point line for 45 percent which helped them enjoy having the lead for more than 30 minutes of the contest. The final shot chart showed the Racers hit 15-of-19 layups for 79 percent. MSU gets back on the floor Friday at home (Nov. 16) for a 7 p.m. game with the Spalding Golden Eagles. | CFSB Center Murray, KY

In a game that got out of hand quickly, the Racers saw 12 players score and five make double-doubles including Ja Morant with 18 points in only 16 minutes of court time. Anthony Smith scored 14 points and Devin Gilmore set his career high with a double-double off the bench with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Freshmen KJ Williams and Jalen Johnson came off the bench to score 12 points each. The Racers tied a school record against the overmatched Golden Eagles with a 62-13 lead in the first half as they hit 23-of-37 shots for 67 percent, while holding Spalding to 14 percent on 3-of-22. The Racers finished the game with a 44-23 second half. The win for the Racers (2-0) takes them into Thanksgiving week and their next game against Missouri State (Nov. 24) at home. Game Notes The team records that fell are many, including the largest margin of victory in the 93 seasons of Murray State's intercollegiate basketball program. The Racers' 70-point margin of victory topped the 68-point win they had against Camp Campbell, Nov. 26, 1946, in an 86-18 win. The game marked the third-lowest opponent score in the 21 seasons of the CFSB Center following 33 points by Anderson in 2006 and 34 points by Samford in 2008. The Racers also tied the school mark with 62 points in the first half. The Racers scored 62 points in a first half twice before: In 1970 against Illinois College and in 1995 against Berry College. The Racers had 32 assists on their 43 field goals in the game and got close, but fell two shy of the team record of 34 against Campbellsville in 1994. | CFSB Center Murray, KY

The win for the Racers (4-1) pushes their home winning streak to 13 as they head out on the road with their next game Saturday (Dec. 8) at Middle Tennessee. Ja Morant scored 22 of his 25 points in the second half to go with a team-high nine rebounds and six assists. The Racers had one of their best balanced scoring games when Shaq Buchanan added 14 and Mike Davis added 12 and Tevin Brown 10 points. With as good as the Racers played in outscoring the Panthers 45-31, it started at the end of the first half when MSU ended the first 20 minutes with an 8-0 run for a 38-36 lead at intermission. MSU's lead went from two points to 10 points in less than five minutes into the final half when Morant hit on a pair of fast break baskets and MSU also got a rebound and score from Brown for a 52-42 lead at 14:48. The lead went to 16 with three minutes left on a Buchanan 3-point basket. The Racers won the rebound battle 43-35 and had a season-low turnover total of 10 in the four NCAA D-I games they've played this season. The Racers now have a week open to take final exams for the fall semester and will return to the court away from home Saturday in a 7 p.m. game at Middle Tennessee. Game Notes Ja Morant was 0-of-6 from the field in the first half and only had three points on three free throws. He more than made up for it in the second half in hitting 6-of-6 shots in the second half and was 9-of-10 from the free throw line. His final line was 6-of-12 from the field and 12-of-14 from the free throw line for 25 points with nine rebounds and six assists. Tied for the top spot in NCAA D-I in assists per game at 90 as the night began, Ja Morant had nine tonight. He was sixth in the nation in scoring at 27.8 and scored 25 points tonight. Mike Davis had his best game so far as a Racer. In only his fifth game at MSU, Davis tied his season-best with 21 minutes on the floor and he was very productive. Davis finished with 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting with five rebounds and one blocked shot. The Racers had a poor first half in the shoot area with a clip of 39 percent (12-of-31), but turned that into a 50 percent second half (13-of-26). MSU had a season-low 10 turnovers against Prairie View. The Racers' home winning streak at the CFSB Center is now at 13. MSU hasn't lost a home game since December 2017 against Auburn. MSU's next chance to continue the streak is Dec. 15 when the Jackson State comes to town. The Racers will also honor Racer great head coach Tevester Anderson and the great career he had at Murray State as an assistant (1995-98) and later as head coach for five seasons (1998-03) and later 10 seasons as head coach at Jackson State (2003-13). | CFSB Center Murray, KY

The Racers improved to 5-1 and posted their first win on the road this season as they travel to Carbondale to take on the Southern Illinois Salukis on Wednesday. Shaq Buchanan tied his career-high with 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting to go with a career-high seven steals. Tevin Brown posted a 15-point night with four 3-pointers. Ja Morant was a main focus of the Blue Raiders as they tried to hold him down with a trapping zone. But the sophomore still managed nine points and a game-high seven assists. MSU has their own great defensive performance when they held MTSU to 29 percent shooting (14-of-48) and 15 percent shooting from the 3-point line (2-of-13). Buchanan was the main defender against MTSU leading scorer Antonio Green who entered the contest leading the Blue Raiders at 19 points per game. Buchanan and the Racers held Green to 11 points (four in the first half). Leading by seven, the Racers popped off a 7-0 run for a 26-12 lead at 4:19 of the first half, before Brown hit a pair of threes to put MSU in front 32-13 at the 2:58 mark. By halftime, the Racers had the lead 35-19 and held MTSU to 7-of-24 from the field for 29 percent and had forced them into 14 turnovers. The Racers put the game away with a 12-0 run for a 52-27 lead with 8:15 left to play. Jaiveon Eaves hit a pair of threes with 4:44 remaining and the Racers led 62-35. Game Notes Buchanan looked like he was going to get the MSU school record for steals in the first half alone when he seized five of them in the first five minutes of the game. He ended with seven, his new career-high ahead of the four he had at Alabama (Nov. 26). The Murray State record for single-game steals is eight. It has occurred twice, with the last in 2008 by Kevin Thomas when the Racers played at Missouri. The other was from 1983 by Brian Stewart in 1983 against Eastern Illinois. The win for the Racers breaks a run of back-to-back MTSU wins in the series and it's their first since 2015 when they won at home 76-65. The win is the Racers' first at the Murphy Center since 2014 when Jarvis Williams dominated the day with 28 points and 12 rebounds in a 68-49 Racer win. The 22-point win for the Racers is the second largest margin of victory in the Coach Matt McMahon era (2018-19 is his fourth season MSU) away from home. The largest margin was at Tennessee Tech (Jan. 13) with a 26-point against the Golden Eagles by a score of 71-45. | Murphy Center Murfreesboro, TN

The Racers (6-1) has won back-to-back road games and won for a fourth consecutive time against teams from the Missouri Valley Conference and have won three in a row. They also evened the all-time series with SIU 18-18 and are 10-4 in road games. Ja Morant scored 23 points to go with 13 assists and Tevin Brown scored a career-high 20 points on 6-of-11 3-point shooting for the Racers. Brion Whitley and KJ Williams each added 10 points for their career highs and Mike Davis grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. The first half for the Racers might go down as the best first half in program history. The Racers hit the Salukis (7-4) with a 15-4 run to build a 19-9 lead at the 10:15 mark. Included in MSU's initial salvo was a pair of Morant 3-pointers. Tevin Brown got hot and hit three-straight 3-pointers and the Racers led 35-14 on a 12-0 run. When the horn sounded for halftime, the Racers had a 31-point lead over SIU at 49-18. In the first 20 minutes, the Racers were 19-of-33 from the field for 67 percent and 8-of-13 from the 3-point line for 61 percent. Defensively, it is hard to imagine the Racers could defend any better in holding SIU to 19 percent (5-of-26) and 1-of-7 from the 3-point line for 14 percent. The Racers had 12 assists on 19 field goals and had a 22-16 rebounding edge. They forced SIU into four more turnovers than field goals. The Racers cruised to their largest margin of victory in the history of their 18 wins in the SIU series. MSU gets back to the friendly confines of the CFSB Center Saturday when they host the Jackson State Tigers on Tevester Anderson night as the university honors the Racers' former head coach. Game Notes The Racers have evened the all-time series with the Salukis at 18-18 and have won back-to-back games and 4-of-6 since the series since it was renewed in 2013. MSU is now 10-5 in away games with SIU. Having already beaten Missouri State (Nov. 24) and now SIU, the Racers take on a third team from the Missouri Valley Conference next week when the Evansville Purple Aces make a visit to the CFSB Center on Tuesday (Dec. 18). The win tonight gives the Racers four-straight wins over MVC teams in the last two seasons. They defeated SIU and Illinois State a year ago and now have defeated Missouri State and SIU. One of the focuses of the game was Murray State's ability to defend the 3-point line and SIU's to make them. The Racers were first in NCAA D-I entering the game by holding opponents to just more than 20 percent (20-of-98). SIU was 16th in the country at 40 percent (77-of-191). The Racers won that battle in going 11-of-26 (.423), while SIU was 3-of-14 (.214). The 28-point win is the largest margin of victory for the Racers in their 18 wins in the SIU series. The previous high was a 51-27 win by 24 points at home in 1932. The 18 points allowed in the first half is the lowest amount Murray State has allowed since 16 points to SIU Edwardsville on Feb. 12, 2015. The Racers are now 5-0 this season against NCAA D-I opponents when they hold them under 70 points. Shaq Buchanan had three steals tonight and has at least one in all seven games this season. He entered the contest ranked 12th in NCAA D-I and tops in the Ohio Valley Conference with 2.67 per game. Tevin Brown's big night means he has hit at least one 3-pointer in the first seven games of his MSU career. The Racers return home Saturday (Dec. 15) for a 7 p.m. tip against Jackson State and the day will mark a great day for Racer fans to celebrate the career of former head coach Tevester Anderson. He assisted Mark Gottfried from 1995-98 and had a big part in three OVC regular season titles and a pair of NCAA appearances. As head coach from 1998-03, Coach T's Murray State teams won 103 games in five seasons including two OVC titles and two trips to the Big Dance. Anderson ended his career at Jackson State (2003-13) by winning two SWAC titles and taking JSU to one NCAA appearance. The Racers will be meeting JSU for just the second time in program history. The first meeting was at old Racer Arena in 1972, an 83-76 Murray State win. | SIU Arena Carbondale, IL

The Racers (7-1) who have won four-straight since a loss at Alabama (Nov. 26), host the Evansville Purple Aces Tuesday at 7 p.m. The contest is the second game of a doubleheader at the CFSB Center as the MSU women's team hosts Southern Illinois at 5 p.m. Shaq Buchanan led all scorers with 19 points, while Tevin Brown hit four 3-pointers on his way to 16 points. Ja Morant dished out 17 assists and scored 10 points. Darnell Cowart and KJ Williams scored 11 and 10 points off the Racer bench to give the team five players in double-figures. The game began as a 20-20 deadlock, then the Racers took the lead for good on a Buchanan 3-pointer at the 7:05 mark. Brion Sanchious made the play of the game with a two-handed block, where he just took the ball out of the air. The Racer center was able to run the floor and dunk of an alley-oop from Morant. Racers led 26-22 with 5:49 left in the half. After another stop and Morant alley-ooped to Buchanan for a 28-22 lead. The Racers' defense picked up and held JSU to a stretch where they were 1-of-9, which allowed the Racers to lead 34-24 at the half intermission. The Racers started the second half with a 12-6 run, aided by back-to-back threes for Buchanan to build a 46-30 lead with 15:44 left. Cowart scored in the late shot clock to complete a 20-7 run for the Racers to lead 68-42 with 4:22 left. Game Notes Coach Tevester Anderson Night was a memorable time for fans to show appreciation to the former Racer coach who was part of three OVC regular season titles as an assistant for Mark Gottfried (1995-98) and another two titles as head coach (1998-03) where he won 103 games in five seasons. It was certainly a moving halftime ceremony when Coach T and his wife Joyce stepped to center court. The Racers pushed their home winning streak in the CFSB Center to 14 with the win. MSU's last loss was in December 2017 to Auburn. The Racers' longest home winning streak of all-time was 47 in a row that closed out old Racer Arena with 30-straight wins and began the CFSB Center with 17-straight. The streak began (1-6-1996) against Belmont and ended against SEMO (1-15-2000). Tevin Brown is shooting the ball at a high level these days. He was 4-of-9 tonight from the 3-point line and is 15-of-30 in the last three games for 50 percent. He has also made at least one 3-pointer in his first eight games as a freshman. In case you're wondering, the MSU record for consecutive games with a 3-pointer is 40 set by Isaiah Canaan in 2012-13. The Racers began the night as the NCAA D-I leader in defending the 3-point line as opponents were only hitting 20 percent on 23-of-112. The Racers kept that good defense going tonight when Jackson State was 4-of-20 for 20 percent. | CFSB Center Murray, KY

Morant never came off the floor and was only two rebounds from a triple-double with 27 points, eight rebounds and 10 assists. Buchanan was MSU's only other double-figure scorer with 10 points and he tied Morant for the team lead with eight rebounds. In the first half, a Morant alley-oop to KJ Williams and then a three from Brion Whitley gave the Racers a 21-20 lead 7:20 before half. The half ended on a good note for the Racers when Jaiveon Eaves hit a buzzer beater at the halftime horn for a 35-28 Racers lead, their largest lead of the game. When Tevin Brown hit from long range to start the second half, the Racers led 38-30 with 18:15 left. The Racers (8-2) saw their five-game winning streak snapped as they battled a top-10 team for the first time since playing Marquette in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. Seeking their first win over a top-10 team since 1971, the Racers trailed 38-35 at halftime and proceeded to start second half with a 21-14 run. The Racers had the lead until the 14:15 mark until Auburn took the lead for good at 57-56. Ja Morant led the Racers with 25 points on 7-of-14 shooting with a night of 10-of-11 from the free throw line to go with eight rebounds and seven assists. Shaq Buchanan hit 4-of-7 from the 3-point line and finished with 21 points, while Tevin Brown had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. The Racers had their fourth bench scoring game of 20-plus points this season with 23. Darnell Cowart scored a MSU career-high 13 points. Auburn (10-2) started the contest 8-0 before the Racers answered for a 10-5 lead on a Brown 3-pointer less than four minutes in. The Racers made it a 24-11 run after the 8-0 Tigers start and MSU had a 24-19 lead at the 8:55 mark on a three from Brion Whitley. The Racers ended the game by winning the rebound stat 35-32 as each team had 14 offensive rebounds. MSU shot 50 percent from the field (29-of-58), while Auburn shot 53 percent (34-of-64). Game Notes The Racers faced a top-10 team for the first time since the 2012 NCAA Tournament in Louisville when they lost to Marquette 62-53. The Racers were No. 11 and MU was No. 9. Of course, games against top-10 teams don't come along very often. MSU's last win against a top-10 was in Ohio Valley Conference play in 1971 against Western Kentucky. Coach Cal Luther's Racers defeated the No. 7 Hilltoppers 73-71. MSU's 11 3-pointers today ties their season-high at SIU. Auburn's 13 threes was the season high against MSU. The previous was six in the Prairie View and Evansville games. The last time a team hit 10 or more against the Racers was last season when Belmont hit 14 on Jan. 18, 2018. Auburn hit 12 against the Racers in their meeting a year ago. The Racers are now going home to see their families for Christmas and return to the floor to host Bethel (Dec. 29) which leads them into the opening of Ohio Valley Conference play at home against Morehead State (Jan. 3) and Eastern Kentucky (Jan. 5). | Auburn Arena Auburn, AL

Winners of five of their last six games, the Racers finish the non-conference portion of the season at 9-2 and open the 71st season of Ohio Valley Conference Thursday at home against Morehead State. Against Bethel (9-3), the Racers saw all 12 players that entered the game score with Ja Morant leading the way with 23 points to go with four rebounds and 13 assists, while Tevin Brown added 18. In his first MSU start, KJ Williams scored 12 of his 16 in the first half and was 8-of-10 from the field. Darnell Cowart has back-to-back double-figure scoring games with 12 points tonight. Jaiveon Eaves was 4-of-4 from the 3-point line in the second half and gave the Racers five double-figure scorers. MSU's record-setting first half was a thing to behold as they led Bethel 16-14 with 14:38 on the clock. Brown hit a 3-point basket and then hit Morant with a sweet alley oop that Morant turned into a reverse dunk for a 25-14 Racer lead. Brown and Morant scored again and the MSU defense locked the Wildcats down on a 19-0 run for a 33-14 at the 10:43 mark. The Racers' 62 points sets a new program record that was set first in 1970 in a win over Illinois College in the Coach Cal Luther era and matched in Coach Mark Gottfried's first game at MSU against Berry College in 1995. MSU's first 20 minutes saw them outscore Bethel by 30 (64-34) and hit 60 percent from the field (23-of-38). MSU only allowed two offensive rebounds to the Wildcats and has 18 assists on their 23 field goals. Game Notes MSU's home winning streak is now 16 in a row. Their last loss at home was in December 2017 to Auburn. MSU is 41-10 at the CFSB Center in the Coach Matt McMahon era. The Racers are 251-44 (.000) all-time in 21 seasons at the CFSB Center. Tevin Brown has hit a 3-point basket in his first 11 games as a Racer. Freshman KJ Williams is finishing around the basket at a high level these days. Getting his first start at MSU tonight, he was 8-of-10 from the field and finished with 16 points. In the last six games, Williams is 22-of-30 from the field for 73 percent. He missed his first two shots tonight and then hit six in a row. The win marks the second 100-point effort this season for the Racers and the eighth in the McMahon era. The most points scored in his MSU tenure was 118 against Brescia in 2017. MSU's 64 points set a new first half scoring mark. The old record was 62 twice. The first was under Coach Cal Luther on Dec. 7, 1970 against Illinois College in a 113-60 win. The other was against Berry College in the season opener on Nov. 25, 1995 which was a 108-62 MSU win in the first game for Coach Mark Gottfried. The Racers open the 71st season of OVC Basketball next week when they host Morehead State (Jan. 3) and Eastern Kentucky (Jan. 5). Both games are the second part of a doubleheader when the Racer women host the same teams with 5 p.m. tips. | CFSB Center Murray, KY

The Racers (11-2) improved to 2-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference and pushed their home winning streak to 18. The Colonels (7-8) fell to 0-2 in OVC play. In a game that had a postseason feel, even though it's only the first week of the conference season, the Racers got 34 points and 10 assists from Ja Morant and 13 points and 13 rebounds from KJ Williams. Tevin Brown, Shaq Buchanan and Darnell Cowart all scored 16 each as the Racers put five in double-figure scoring. Never having the lead in the first half (EKU led 48-41 at the intermission), the Racers trailed by as many as 12 points with 18:11 remaining before they caught the Colonels with at 15:33 on Buchanan's dunk to complete a run of 15-2. EKU regained the lead by five (63-58) at 13:44, but the Racers answered on the shooting of Brown. His fourth-straight 3-pointer at 12:41 made sure the Racers never trailed again. EKU tied it 60-60 with 9:53 left, but could never go back in front. The Racers put the game away with four dunks in the final 2:09 by Morant, Cowart and a pair from Buchanan to thrill a crowd of 6,552 at The Bank. A lot of shots fell in this one with the Racers shooting 54 percent on 37-of-69, while EKU shot 49 percent on 30- of-67. The game will be memorable for its intensity that reminded of what March tournament games are like and for the highlighting of two of the top players in the OVC. EKU's Nick Mayo scored 36 points and Ja Morant pumped in 34 for the Racers. Both have gained their schools much national attention with much more to come. Game Notes After asserting their newfound inside presence, the Racers had 60 points in the paint against EKU after scoring 64 points against Morehead State. KJ Williams and Darnell Cowart had a great week for the Racers in the wins over Morehead State and EKU. Williams' 13 rebounds against EKU is his MSU career high. Together in the two games, they combined to hit 26-of-35 from the field for 74 percent and had a scoring average of 31.5 points per game. They also grabbed 35 rebounds for a 17.5 average. Morant had his his seventh double-double this season tonight and his 13th in 45 career games with the Racers. The Racers' home winning streak moved to 18 in a row with the win over EKU. The streak is tied for the eighth-longest in Murray State history. With 90 points against Morehead State and 97 against EKU, the Racers have scored back-to-back games of 90-plus points for the first time against NCAA D-I teams that didn't involve an overtime for the first time since 2015. On Jan. 15, 2015, MSU beat Belmont at home 92-77 and defeated Tennessee State 92-71 on Jan. 17, 2015. The Racers now lead the all-time series with EKU 101-61 and are 56-21 at home. As two of the founding members of the OVC, the Racers and Colonels have played every season since 1945. The Racers have won the last five meetings since a loss in the 2014 OVC Tournament. The Racers visit EKU for a second meeting this season on Feb. 16. With a 2-0 week, the Racers will have their seventh-consecutive week (next week) ranked in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 Poll. The Racers were No. 9 last week, while OVC foe Belmont was No. 6. The Racers and Bruins meet in MSU's next home game Jan. 24. | CFSB Center Murray, KY
